The cottage

Simple, quiet and entirely yours

The Pepper Cottage is a 50-year-old Sri Lankan village house, renovated with the help of our neighbours: stone walls kept, a new timber roof, and long wooden beds made by the village carpenter. It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a big kitchen and a terrace that looks east over the lake.

Most guests take the whole house: a family, a few friends, or someone who wants room to work. Rooms are available too when the house isn't booked out.

Community-run

Your stay pays the village, not a platform

The house was renovated with the help of people from Wepathana and is still looked after by them. Seena farms the pepper estate and keeps more than 60% of what it earns. Neighbours cook the meals, clean the house and drive the tuk-tuks.

When you book direct, none of your money goes to commission, so more of it stays here.

Things to do

Waterfalls, temples and a mountain range up the road

All activities →
  • The jagged peaks of the Knuckles Mountain Range under dramatic clouds

    Hike the Knuckles

A UNESCO-listed mountain range starts about 20 km up the road. We'll put you in touch with a good local guide.

  • A green and chestnut bee-eater perched on a branch in the garden

    Birds from the terrace

80+ species around the house, including 18 of Sri Lanka's 34 endemic species. Binoculars and a field guide are on the shelf.

  • A villager walking along a green path near Wepathana

    Walk the village

Temples, rice paddies, a handloom mill and a carpenter's workshop, all within an easy walk of the front door.

Why book direct

Same house, better terms

We're on Booking.com and Airbnb too, but booking with us directly is better for you and for the village.

  • Best price, always

Never more than Booking.com or Airbnb. Found it cheaper there? Send us the link and we'll match it.

  • The whole house

Book all three bedrooms from $120 a night. You can't do that on the booking sites.

  • Talk to us first

Ask about the road, the weather or the food, and plan your days before you arrive.

  • Extras, arranged

Home-cooked dinners, an Ayurvedic massage or a guided hike, sorted in advance.

Stay a while

Two nights, minimum. Most people wish they'd booked more.

One night here is a shame. You arrive, you find the terrace, and by the time the place starts to work on you it's time to pack. So we ask for two nights or more.

What usually happens: guests book two nights and extend while they're here. Others go off travelling and come back for a few more days at the end of their trip. Some stay for months, and a few return year after year.

It's the quiet that does it. Birdsong instead of traffic, the sound of water in the garden, and a kind of calm that people tell us they feel the moment they sit down.
