The cottage
Simple, quiet and entirely yours
The Pepper Cottage is a 50-year-old Sri Lankan village house, rebuilt by local craftspeople with stone walls, a timber roof and long wooden beds made by the village carpenter. It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a big kitchen and a terrace that looks east over the lake.
Most guests take the whole house: a family, a few friends, or someone who wants room to work. Rooms are available too when the house isn't booked out.
Community-run
Your stay pays the village, not a platform
The house was renovated by people from Wepathana and is still looked after by them. Seena farms the pepper estate and keeps more than 60% of what it earns. Neighbours cook the meals, clean the house and drive the tuk-tuks.
When you book direct, none of your money goes to commission, so more of it stays here.

Waterfalls, temples and a mountain range up the road
Hike the Knuckles
A UNESCO-listed mountain range starts about 20 km up the road. We'll put you in touch with a good local guide.
Birds from the terrace
80+ species around the house, including 18 of Sri Lanka's 34 endemic species. Binoculars and a field guide are on the shelf.
Walk the village
Temples, rice paddies, a handloom mill and a carpenter's workshop, all within an easy walk of the front door.
